Math and Science WASL

The Math and Science WASL will be going on the next two weeks. If you are in 8th or 10th grade, you will be required to come in for testing. If you are in 11th or 12th grade and have not passed math, you must continue to take the test! Dates for the tests are as follows:

Ways to Save Gas

With the steady increase in gas prices, it is becoming more important to find ways to save gas.

Pierce County, King County, and Snohomish County have joined together to create a Bus Trip Planner. By entering your start and end location and some information and preferences about your trip, you can route out the best bus route (by speed, number of transfers, or amount of walking) to get you from one place to another. This is a worthwhile resource to help you come in for Online visits without having to worry about the rising gas prices.

You can also fill out the Transportation Request Form and return it to Dulcie Joy (253.683.6884) on the Challenger campus to register on one of our school bus routes.

Webserver Downtime!

4 Weeks To Go

With only four weeks remaining, the summer school is well underway. Make sure you are keeping up with your courses. You should be 1/3 of the way through your coursework by now. Remember to leave a week at the end to make sure there are no last minute redos or fixes still needed.

Contact Your Advisor

With a long and beautiful summer break, you probably enjoyed not having to contact your advisor each week. Well, now that we are back, it is important that you get back into the habit. Contact can be a phone call, an email exchange (you email your advisor and he or she emails you back), or a visit. Make sure to make an appointment with your advisor if you plan to come in for a visit.

Distance learning is a quickly growing field of education. A recent report in the summer issue of Education Next points to the projected increase in online programs among high school students to include as many as half of all classes being offered in an online format by the year 2019. With the rising cost of gas and real estate and an increasing need for a personalized and individualized education experience, distance learning has a lot to offer. Bethel Online Academy (BOA) is one such distance learning school. BOA serves a diverse group of students who are looking for creative ways to meet their education and career goals. This group includes students involved in up and coming bands, devoted horseback riders and trainers, and students seeking further education from community colleges and trade schools.

One great benefit of Bethel Online Academy is the ability to partner with other programs within our district. Another advantage is the flexibility in the online schedule. Online classes are “live” 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. Students in online academy can hold day jobs, explore future career interests, or take care of children or siblings during the day, while completing classes at night—a benefit that in the past has been limited to higher education.

Some students attend community college or trade school, while taking care of graduation requirements online. This eliminates the need to travel to different campuses. The Bethel Online Academy also partners with home-schooled students who seek additional educational support.

Unlike many state programs, each student enrolled in the Bethel Online Academy is assigned one advisor who stays with the student throughout the program. With a movement for individualized education plans and individualized interventions, online academy truly opens the door for a personal experience. There is no classroom to hold back the modifications we can make to help students move forward on their pathway to success.

Stop! It’s WASL Time!

WASL is quickly approaching. Those who are in need of the WASL will be getting a call soon to let them know and make sure they are planning on coming. All WASL tests will be administered at Challenger Campus EXCEPT for the 11th and 12th grade Math WASL which will be at the Elk Plains Grange. Arrive at 7:45am and testing will begin promptly at 8:00. This is a state graduation requirement and a legislative requirement for all 10th graders.

The last day of school for students is June 11. June 15 is a teacher prep day for finalizing grades and paperwork. After that, limited summer hours will take effect. Summer hours are yet to be determined, but will run Tue through Thu.

Welcome back to another year at Bethel Online Academy! The school year is underway and we’ve gotten off to a running start! If you have not already filled out your registration information, you MUST, MUST, MUST do that by Wednesday or Thursday of this week. Turn your forms into the Challenger registrar, Dulcie Joy (253.683.6884 or jdoy@bethelsd.org).

You should check in with your advisor soon regarding changes to the attendance policy and new requirements for this year. Classes are being registered for you right now, so if you do not have your classes yet, contact your advisor to make sure you are ready to go. You should also setup a start-of-the-year meeting with your advisor to figure out where you are and to talk about what your goals are this year.
